Instantly Charmed

As we approached Sub Rosa in Church Hill, we could see a crowd of people inside. We joined in, and I grabbed two chairs at the food bar while the hubs proceeded to get in the order line.

There's a din of lively conversation from customers waiting in line, and sometimes chatting is preferred over ordering. Some people buy their goods and go, while others linger at tables and settle into easy morning conversation or quietly read. Espresso, various steaming drinks, and delicious looking baked goods enter waiting hands and are eagerly devoured.

Behind the counter are several shelves, trays and racks with rows of beautifully browned breads and pastries. There's a smooth hustle and flow from the hard working the staff.

In the back is the center of the universe for Sub Rosa - the mighty wood-fired oven. I am in awe of the baker who continuously pulls dark, crusty loaves of bread from the hot oven chambers while he expertly maneuvers the long-handled paddle like a maestro swings a baton.

High ceilings. Wood dining tables that look as though they're made from reclaimed wood. Smaller tables topped with beautiful metal trays. A shelf of pour-over supplies. Gorgeous windows that let in an abundance of natural light. You want to linger.

We're instantly charmed. We're confident that whatever we plan to order will be simply wonderful.

And everything was so very delicious. I drank too much coffee and got a little wired, but I savored my caffeine high for the rest of the day!

As we leave I notice a house for sale. I tell the hubs I want to put in a bid for it right away because I needed to move right next door to this place.

Foggy Adventure

A bunch of us hit the road super early on Sat to travel to a little town outside of Goochland for an early morning adventure.

The fog was so thick we had to hold up the entire caravan of travelers in a parking lot until it cleared up a little.

The sun finally burst out full force from the thick, cloudy sky and mother nature gifted us with a bright fall sunrise over the foggy hills. It was incredibly lovely to watch the steam slowly burn off the landscape to reveal beautiful fall colors.

Such a stunning and unexpected visual treat!

Fall Aboard

What happened to the weekend? It flew by. In fact, what happened to Oct?!

If you're like me, as usual its going to become a dazzlingly, hurried scene heading into the holidays. We're already making plans for December events.

While shopping at Stony Point I stopped by Anthropology to browse new fall additions. The hip design staff was making ornaments for their holiday tree and inviting customers to join in.

After I sat down at the beautifully arranged table (as only Anthro can do) and took in the mounds of glitter, paint, cardboard ornament templates and other crafty paraphernalia, I realized that I felt slightly intimidated and that it had been entirely too long since I'd gotten crafty like that. I quickly pushed any doubts aside and dug in!

While relearning how to wield a hot glue gun (the feel of hot glue singeing the tip of a finger rekindled long forgotten crafting memories), I chatted with the delightful staff as we folded, wrapped and assembled lovely ornaments that resembled abstract gilded fruit and piled them into overflowing mounds and bowls.

Simple crafts are so much fun.

Pumpkin Time

A blog in motion tends to stay in motion, whereas a blog at rest tends to....well, you know rest.

Hello. How have you been?

Dragon Boat Festival

As usual, the Dragon Boat Festival and race at Rockett's Landing was a great success, even with the hour of severe weather that popped up in the middle of it all that blew things into a crazy mess. My thoughts are with the folks throughout our area who suffered from damage or loss.

We had a lot of activities going on in Richmond on Sat, and that short, nasty storm really tried to put a stop to it all. Not. Not for every event, anyway.

The Dragon Boat race on the James River continued after the storm passed. You can't keep a bunch of dedicated competitors down! The skies cleared and the sunset was ravishing.

Oh, and this dish was a great success yesterday. It didn't turn out quite as lovely as the version posted by the talented chef who created it. My crust was a little...um...floppier, but I managed to make it look presentable after putting it all together and baking it. And the taste - the most important part - oh my, my, my was it yummy. I plan to make it again REAL soon.

Hello, it's me.

Hope you're all having a super weekend. We're watching the Dragon Boat Festival on the James River from our balcony.

Of course the horse has nothing to do with the festival, but I think that eye reflection is so cool, and being near the water with all the reflections made me think of this shot. Spent the day at a farm not long ago and had the best time photographing it all - not just the obvious things (like reflections in a horse's eye :), but also tiny vignettes tucked in corners all over the place.

I'm attempting to make Burst Tomato Galette with Corn and Zucchini for dinner tonight (with roasted chicken). Looks delicious and hope I do it justice. I'm a little nervous about the crust, truth be told! A full report later!

Oh, does my a** look wide in that reflection? No? I didn't think so.

GASP!

"Hey Flo, I heard through the grapevine that Nellie laid an egg OUTSIDE of the coop!!!"

"Oh Myrtle, quit gossiping! There's no evidence of that!"

Snort

Why is it that guys always turn the volume up on the TV to an ear crushing decibel when they're attempting to watch sports and run on the treadmill at the same time at the small gym where I work out?

Sometimes they turn up the volume and then get into a loud conversation with someone on the treadmill next door after which they barely pay attention to the TV. In fact, they then end up in direct competition with the TV regarding the noise level and they miss the game. What's up with that? I've seen it happen time and time again.

I mean, really, does the sound even have to be up at all when watching sports? Everything you need to know about the game is happening on screen and you never really even have to listen to it, do you?  It's not like watching a movie, a DIY project, the news, or some other program that must be heard.

I'm sure a lot of you guys out there in virtual land are snorting about the last comment.

Snort on. You know it's true. :)

Happy Easter!

How sweet it is, rain and all!

The hubs made a yummy brunch - Crispy Coated Orange French Toast and Bacon-Asparagus Strata. OMG good.

A day to relax! I did actually workout this morning - sure didn't feel like it. To make up for it I plan to spend some of this afternoon doing absolutely nothing but watching a movie and eating more strata (thus consuming a gazillion more calories than I burned today during the workout).

Hope you all are having a beautiful day!

Filmology Continues

Got my second roll of expired film back from the lab - Kodak black & white TMax 400.

I like the results! The images are super grainy, but I'm not at all unhappy with that (by-product of expired film). And I'm pretty pleased with the exposure considering I was getting used to the camera and learning the proper way to expose film.

I did some dodging, burning, and adjusting for contrast in Lightroom (rather than in the darkroom like previous - dare I say old - days). A faded look seems to be another hallmark of expired film, especially if hasn't been stored properly over the years.

I'm in the process of shooting my 2nd roll of fresh film - Fuji 400H. I finished the first fresh roll of Kodak Tri-X 400 B&W a few weeks ago.  Then I plan to move on to the Mamiya 220 - can't wait to shoot with that monster. Once I get two rolls shot with the Mamiya's (I have two of them for now) I'll ship all the rolls off to the lab.

The last shot is a double exposure - which is a ton of fun with film. You never know exactly how it's going to turn out until you see the negative. I need to practice that technique!

Sure wish I could spend more time on this.  I'm loving it so much!

Snow Revisited

I was so smitten with the quick and furious snow we got recently that I wanted to extend the (visual) excitement for just a little while longer - especially since its been close to 50 degrees over the last couple of days.

Love this collection of NYC's Grand Central Terminal.

Photo Walk

On Sat I spent some time at a local farm with my digital and film cameras. What a great day.

We got there early in the morning. It was cold and the overcast sky covered everything with a gray haze. My favorite kind of light and weather to shoot in. I was bundled up with many layers. Had on my lucky hat (the one I wore to Italy in 1998) and camera gloves (the top of the glove folds back off the tips of my fingers so I can easily adjust my camera settings). I could have stayed there all day.

Can you believe daylight savings begins on Mar 10?  I've seen more and more light in the sky over the last three weeks as I leave the office at 6:30 - so the days are getting longer. Soon, we'll be feeling the sweet warmth of spring.

These are all digital images. Still have a few shots left to take on the film camera - I'm trying out fresh film this time rather than expired. Can't wait to get them developed.

Chihuly Art

I really hope all of our locals got a chance to see the exhibit by internationally renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts before it closed recently. If you didn't, you missed a feast of visual goodness.

I'm sure all of you have seen NatGeo documentaries where they explore the ocean floor and investigate the most fantastic things growing in all kinds of colorful shapes imaginable. The works in this exhibit reminded me of that.

Even the reflecting pool just outside of the museum was graced with stunning red glass reeds.

If you love visual arts as I do, this exhibit would have thrilled you to the bone.

The very last photo is just a small sample of the authentic American Indian blankets that Chihuly collects and that have inspired him in his work over the years. The exhibit also included many pieces of colorful and functional glass dishes, as well as a huge table he made that had a top created from a piece of raw wood sliced lengthwise from a giant tree trunk. Very impressive talent!

I threw the photo of champagne glasses in there because we had lunch at the museum's restaurant Amuse. Hey - it's colorful glass, right? I think it fits right in!
